Ducks Unlimited Canada recognizes Comox Valley artist
Courtenay, B.C., February 23, 2009 — Courtenay nature artist W. Allan Hancock was awarded the title of Ducks Unlimited Canada's (DUC) Pacific Flyway National Sponsor Print Artist for his painting, Silent Sentinel - Barred Owl. The print had previously earned Hancock recognition as the 2009 B.C. Artist of the Year.
“I’m thrilled to be part of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s art program once again,” says Hancock. “I greatly appreciate DUC's efforts as they work to conserve the natural world that inspires my work.”
“Ducks Unlimited Canada is privileged to have the support of talented artists like Allan Hancock who donate their work to our art portfolio program," says Comox Valley committee chair Greg Sawchuk. "Their creativity and generosity generate lots of excitement at our fundraising events and help us raise much-needed dollars for wetland conservation."
With 25 years of history, the British Columbia Art Print program is one of DUC’s finest provincial art programs. Hundreds of artists submit their work in hopes of being selected as the artist of the year by delegates attending B.C.’s annual volunteer provincial convention. Those selected have their artwork made into high-quality prints and receive national, and in some cases, international exposure at DUC fundraising events across Canada and the U.S. The contributions from this program support DUC's on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
Hancock has been a long-time supporter of Ducks Unlimited Canada. His artwork has been showcased in numerous annual portfolio collections, including most recently in 2007. In 1996, at the age of 28, Hancock became the youngest artist to receive recognition as the Ducks Unlimited Canada National Artist of the Year.
For more than 25 years, artists have donated their artwork to help DUC conserve vanishing wetland habitats. DUC's fundraising season is underway and people are invited to view and purchase the current collection by Hancock and other renowned outdoor artists.
