Canadian Intermountain Joint Venture (CIJV)

The Canadian Intermountain Joint Venture (CIJV) represents a formal, coordinated effort by multiple partners to conserve habitat for waterfowl and other birds in the Canadian Intermountain region, which roughly corresponds to the southern half of the BC Interior.

The Canadian Intermountain covers over 489,000 km 2, almost 50% of the area of BC, and supports a breeding waterfowl population of approximately 1.6 million birds. Four and a half percent of this area (20,000 km 2) is lakes and wetlands. The Canadian Intermountain is a landscape of varyings elevation and climate that has resulted in a tremendous diversity of habitat types, including desert, grasslands, shrub-steppe, riparian, wetlands, dry and moist coniferous forests, and alpine tundra.

CIJV partners have agreed upon a common “vision” for the intermountain: a landscape that supports healthy populations of birds, maintains biodiversity, and fosters sustainable resource use. To reach this vision will require cooperative national and international efforts, guided by sound science and an adaptive approach to managing lands. The CIJV partnership has been endorsed by NABCI (external linke) Canada, and the partners have developed a collaboration plan to guide their actions over the next decade.
