The East Kootenay region is a rare jewel of abundant resources, key habitats and diverse species that are increasingly being threatened by human development.
East Kootenay Conservation Program (EKCP)
Ducks Unlimited Canada and its partners in the East Kootenay Conservation Program (EKCP) are dedicated to conserving the rich biological diversity of the East Kootenay area while balancing the economic and social needs of the community and the people who live there.
The EKCP promotes habitat and ecosystem management for private land that protects key habitats and diverse species under threat.
The valley landscapes provide critical habitat for wildlife. The grasslands, dry forests, montane forests, scattered wetlands and cottonwood habitats create a biodiversity unique in the province. Over 270 species of birds and some of the region’s rarest species such as the badger, leopard frog and Swainson’s hawk rely on the East Kootenay landscape.
EKCP Partners
Government and nongovernment agencies, First Nations, conservation organizations, industry and private landowners are all partners in the EKCP.
