Prairie Habitat Joint Venture (PHJV)
The Peace Parkland Biome (PPB) is centered around the Peace River of northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta. It represents the most northerly area of aspen parkland within the prairie pothole region. Habitat programs delivered in the PPB are administered within the Prairie Habitat Joint Venture, the largest habitat implementation plan under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP).
Historically, the Peace Parkland Biome included a mix of aspen forests and grasslands, dotted with pothole wetlands, all contained within a boreal forest boundary. Periodic fires kept the boreal forest species at bay, and maintained the productive habitat diversity that supported a host of waterfowl and wildlife species. Agricultural expansion into the area began in the early 1900's. Breaking the grasslands, clearing the forests, and draining wetlands had significant impacts to waterfowl and wildlife in the area. Ducks Unlimited Canada works closely with agricultural producers to restore wetlands and permanent cover in some of these areas, and promotes agricultural practices that protect wetlands and existing native habitats.
