Fraser River Delta
The Fraser River delta provides some of the most important habitat for wintering and migrating waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway. The Fraser River delta is the largest estuary in British Columbia and supports the highest densities of wintering birds in Canada. This includes an estimated one million waterfowl and five million shorebirds. Combined with north Puget Sound, the entire ecosystem complex is estimated to support 45 million waterfowl days. However, as the human population increases in the Fraser River delta-north Puget Sound the region is threatened with deterioration and loss of habitat.
DUC is currently working with local partners, landowners and government to conserve critical agricultural lands and habitat for waterfowl. Through our On-Farm Planning program (PDF, 391 KB) and our cross border research with DUInc, we are conserving priority habitats and establishing long term and sustainable land use solutions for this priority area.
