Doe River
The Doe River landscape is located within the Peace Parkland Biome in northeastern BC. It is one of the 18 key program delivery landscapes identified in the BC Peace River Parkland Biome Implementation Plan. Several small creeks and rivers, including its namesake, cross the landscape, and the Kiskatinaw River forms its northern boundary. Together, these waterways made it relatively easy for early settlers to drain the productive wetlands and increase the amount of arable land. Today, permanent and seasonal water is lacking because of the high drainage that has occurred in the last century.
Ducks Unlimited Canada’s habitat program in the Doe River landscape is focused on securing remaining wetlands and restoring wetlands that have been drained. The p urchase of several key land parcels has allowed DUC to plug old drains and restore the water on these properties. At the same time, DUC works with agricultural producers to promote land management activities that benefit the watershed, improve surface water quality, and provide habitat for local wildlife.
