Tachick Lake
Highlights
The Tachick Lake Project consists of 46 hectares of aspen forests and lakeshore.
Under this Intermountain Wetland Conservation Program, Ducks Unlimited Canada now holds the title to this prime lakeshore property and can ensure permanent protection for shoreline, nearby shallows, and the forested uplands. Nearby properties have recently been cleared for the production of cereals and forage, and throughout this region, forestry, recreation and agriculture pressures are increasing.
In addition to the aspen forests, the project area encompasses nearly 2 km of the extensive marshy shoreline of Tachick Lake. The littoral zone of this lake provides critical feeding and moulting opportunities for up to 5,000 waterfowl per day during spring and fall migration.
Background
The Tachick Lake project lies along the west shoreline of the lake and fronts onto over 200 hectares of shallows rich in pondweeds and aquatic life, and dotted with small floating islets of cattail. The lake is a popular fishing spot because of its native whitefish populations and regularly-stocked rainbow trout, and it is a popular feeding site for white pelicans from nearby Stum Lake, BC’ s only nesting site for this species. Cavity nesting ducks such as Barrow’s and Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead and various upland birds nest throughout the aspen forests.
The goal of this project is to protect and maintain these habitats in their natural state, and to monitor wildlife use to better understand the significance of BC ’s parkland forests in DUC’s continental management of waterfowl. There is a small part already under cultivation and this will be managed to provide some permanent ground-nesting cover for waterfowl and other small wildlife.
