Farm Pond Construction
Wetlands are nature’s water filters and are important in keeping water clean. The many types of plants, bacteria and animals that live in wetlands remove many harmful impurities. Wetlands are so good at removing impurities from water that they are often used to help treat and clean wastewater.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) works with the agricultural community to improve the quality of water leaving farms. Runoff from feedlots, solid manure storages and disposal of milkhouse washwater are the focus of these efforts. The natural processes within wetlands can be engineered through constructed wetland systems to treat contaminated runoff.
These constructed farm ponds also create wetland habitat where habitat did not previously exist. Constructed wetlands also enhance landscape diversity and protect surface and ground water by improving the quality of water flowing from the farm.
Farm pond construction is one of the eligible activities under the Agricultural Biodiversity Program offered through the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. This program provides NS farmers with access to technical and financial assistance for projects that will improve biodiversity and wildlife habitat on their farms.
