Youth running alongside a wetland
Environmental Education for our youth is a DUC priority.

DUC in Nova Scotia

DUC’s main office for Atlantic Canada is located in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and was opened in 1974.

How We Conserve

In Nova Scotia, Ducks Unlimited Canada implements different conservation tools depending on the habitat type, habitat threat and land ownership. The type of conservation tool used ensures effective and efficient use of DUC resources.

Our conservation efforts are firmly guided by cutting edge science and environmental and wetland research.

On the Ground

Efforts include wetland/habitat enhancement and restoration activities that are delivered through conservation agreements, with a main focus on the agricultural landscape. Land securement through property acquisition is also utilized in high priority areas.

Field Research

Provides DUC with the information necessary to make conservation decisions by providing science based data outlining waterfowl needs and associated habitat.

Policy

DUC is able to influence conservation policies at the local and provincial level that impact wetlands on both private and Crown lands.

Education

Programs promote awareness and appreciation of waterfowl and wetlands along with their importance to other wildlife and people. DUC is teaching young people, our conservationists of tomorrow, through a combination of formal and informal education opportunities.

Mapping Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

GIS is a computer mapping system and like research, it enables DUC to target conservation programs with greater effectiveness and efficiency. GIS tools allow DUC to track landscape changes and identify priority areas for restoration, protection and advancing sustainable development.
