Policy
Public policy is one of the most important habitat conservation tools available to Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). DUC’s policy staff provides leadership and strategic guidance to key stakeholders, including all levels of government, public and civil servants, politicians, DUC volunteers and supporters, the media and the general public. Policy staff aim to evolve the way governments do business, to the benefit wetlands, associated uplands and wildlife.
Policy’s objectives vary. In some cases the desired change may be regulatory in nature and in need of legislation in order to be effective. There may also be situations when the adoption of a policy or operating procedure at the departmental level of government is all that is required to bring about the desired change. In still other instances the desired change can only be brought about if there is a change in the way a particular level of government or a government department does business. For example, legislation or operating procedures may be in place, but not enforced or followed. Here a change in operating procedures to make existing legislation/ policies more effective may be required.
The adoption of a policy by government can have an immediate and wide scale impact. Therefore, policy work can result in significant changes in land use and bring about wide scale benefits to wildlife and society.
