Ducks Unlimited Offers Reward for Radio-tagged Geese
Oak Hammock Marsh MB, September 29 – Ducks Unlimited is offering a $100 reward for the return of 22 satellite transmitters attached to geese migrating through the Atlantic provinces this fall.
Anyone who shoots or finds a goose with a transmitter is encouraged to record the date, location and condition of the bird and report it to Mark Gloutney, senior biologist for Ducks Unlimited in Atlantic Canada at (902) 667-8726. DU wants the transmitters returned so they can be used again.
DU biologists use the data collected to track the movements of the geese and to learn more about the overall health of the goose population. This information will improve estimates of the number of birds that can be harvested and help to identify important habitat areas.
The high tech transmitters weigh only 35 grams and have a 15 cm antenna. They are attached to the birds with a flexible Teflon harness. The radio sends signals to satellites that circle the globe every two hours. The data is sent to a receiver on Earth and then transferred by Internet to the researchers' computers.
Beginning Oct. 15, follow the fall migration of these tagged geese on the Internet at www.ducks.ca/geese.
