Lieutenant-Governor Announces Award for Wetland Supporters

Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award to recognize contributions to wetland conservation in Nova Scotia

Amherst, N.S., July 27, 2005—For the second year, the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia will present the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award in recognition of individuals and groups who work to conserve and protect the province’s wetland habitats.

The award, which is given out annually, is sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). It recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in Nova Scotia, and/or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.

“Many people in Nova Scotia recognize just how valuable our wetlands are, and these groups and individuals work hard to conserve them,” said The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia. “That’s why I’m so pleased to present this award to recognize the efforts of those who champion the conservation of Nova Scotia’s wetlands.”

Last year, Arthur Irving was honoured with the award for his personal vision and leadership in the establishment of the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre at Acadia University. This impressive academic facility provides young people an opportunity to understand the value of wetlands and coastal ecosystems for waterfowl, other wildlife and people. “I was honoured to be presented with the Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award,” said Irving. “I was pleased to see the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre was recognized for its progressive work in wetland conservation and its commitment to academic excellence.”

If you know an individual or group that has contributed to wetland conservation and meets the award criteria, please consider nominating them for the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award. To make a nomination, forward the name of the individual or group, by mail, to Kerri Walton, Ducks Unlimited Canada, P.O. Box 430, Unit 64, Highway 6, Amherst, N.S., B4H 3Z5, or by e-mail to du_amherst@ducks.ca by August 26, 2005.

“DUC is truly honoured to be partnering with the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia in the presentation of this award,” said DUC president Peter D. Carton. “We lose more of our wetlands each and every day, and by rewarding those that labour to conserve these precious habitats, we hope to encourage more people to get involved in helping to secure a healthy environment for future generations of people and wildlife.”

DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and their associated habitats for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
