Common Wildlife
Nelson Conservation Area
Highlights
Hiram and Kathleen Nelson, through the assistance of Ducks Unlimited Canada donated 465 acres of wetlands and young forest to the people and province of Nova Scotia. This land contributes to the Cole Harbour-West Lawrencetown Coastal Heritage Park. The location of this land is significant as coastal development continues to increase in this area.
Hiram Nelson grew up in Tufts Cove near Dartmouth, NS, but has lived near Victoria, BC since 1967. Throughout his life he has developed an appreciation for nature and outdoor activities and continues to be an avid fisherman and golfer.
In 1947 Nelson and a group of friends ventured north with intentions of prospecting for their fortunes. By 1950 they staked their claim on a large enough quantity of asbestos to secure all of their financial futures.
In 2000, Nelson made this important land donation to give back to the area he considers home.
