DUC – Wetland and Wildlife Conservation in Québec
The province of Québec is the oldest in Canada, coming up on its 400th anniversary. Throughout those four centuries, Québec has grown and prospered. Today, it is one of the richest and most unique cultures in Canada.
Québec is home to more than just people. Many waterfowl and other wildlife species can be found in Québec’s wetlands, particularly along the St. Lawrence River.
Unfortunately, four centuries of increasing human activity have also had an incredible impact on Québec’s wetland habitats. Agriculture, industry and urban expansion continue to threaten Québec’s remaining wetland ecosystems.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) works in Québec to conserve wetlands and their associated habitats. These precious natural areas benefit waterfowl, other wildlife and people by providing habitat, naturally filtering our water and much, much more.
Ottawa River Action Plan
DUC staff have completed a three-year program to conserve habitat threatened by development along the Ottawa River. DUC worked hand-in-hand with Québec Wildlife and Parks, as well as eleven landowners, to conserve 363 acres of habitat east of Ottawa.
The main focus areas for this conservation action plan centred on wetland restoration, farm management planning to conserve upland habitats and habitat purchases. Today, the area is used by hunters, birdwatchers and thousands of migratory waterfowl.
Québec’s Provincial Water Policy
The Province of Québec has committed to a conservation campaign, including watershed management and increased protection for wetlands, through a provincial water strategy. Under this new plan, DUC signed an agreement with the Québec Ministry of the Environment that will see DUC receive $1.2 million.
These funds will be matched by DUC and used in 15 habitat securement projects along the St. Lawrence River, where Québec’s most significant waterfowl habitats are found.
Support DUC
DUC continues to build partnerships with government, landowners and other organizations to conserve wetlands and their associated habitats in Québec. To date, DUC has positively influenced 52, 188 acres of habitat in Québec!
While DUC is making much progress, there’s still a lot of wetland conservation work to be done. DUC needs your help and support. Become a DUC member, volunteer or make a charitable donation today!
