Olympic gold medalist Jon Montgomery teams up with Ducks Unlimited Canada
Skeleton racer to act as “celebrity auctioneer” at the 31st Annual Calgary Fundraising Dinner and Auction
Calgary, Alta., October 13, 2010 —He’s a fast sliding, fast talking Canadian hero who’s stepping up to make a difference in the health of the environment by saving wetland habitat. Already crowned an Olympic champion for his speed on the skeleton track, gold medalist Jon Montgomery will also be a champion for wetland conservation, sharing his gift of the gab at Ducks Unlimited Canada’s upcoming fundraising dinner and auction in Calgary.
The event, being held on Thursday, October 21 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, will feature fine dining, great entertainment and exciting live and silent auctions, with special items being auctioned off by Canada’s own super slider. Proceeds support DUC’s vital wetland conservation efforts and help make on-the-ground habitat work ,scientific research and education programs possible across the province.
“I greatly admire what Ducks Unlimited Canada is doing for wetlands and wildlife,” says Montgomery. “As someone who is active in the outdoors and concerned about the conservation of Canada’s natural areas, I’m pleased to be helping raise funds in support of wetland conservation. The Calgary dinner and auction will be a great time in support of a great cause and I hope to see many people out supporting DUC.”
Famous for attracting the who’s who of Calgary’s business leaders and the most dedicated conservationists from across the province, the event also boasts Rick George, CEO of Suncor Energy as its honourary chair. George is a proud DUC supporter and is challenging fellow corporations in Calgary to purchase a table at the event and show their commitment to helping save Alberta’s wetlands.
“We are looking forward to another outstanding fundraising event this year,” says Dahrlyne Knaus, DUC Fundraising Manager in the Calgary area. “It’s tremendous to have Jon Montgomery and Rick George on board and we hope that other community members will join them in supporting wetland conservation in Alberta.”
Since 1938, DUC has invested $300 million in wetland conservation in Alberta. Yet, wetland loss continues at an alarming rate. In settled areas of Alberta, up to 70 per cent of wetlands have disappeared. Wetlands provide many valuable benefits such as storing and cleaning our water, reducing the impacts of flood, drought and erosion, moderating the effects of climate change by storing carbon and providing habitat for approximately 600 species of wildlife. There is still much to do to save these natural areas. By attending DUC’s Calgary Fundraising Dinner and Auction, you can make a difference and help stop wetland loss.
Tickets for DUC’s 31st Annual Calgary Fundraising Dinner and Auction are $175 each. Order your tickets today by visiting www.ducks.ca/calgarydinner or calling 1-877-843-8257.
