Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

1. What is DUC and what do you do?

DUC is a national, private, non-profit organization dedicated to conserving wetlands and their associated habitats. This is done for the benefit of waterfowl, other wildlife, as well as for people.

2. What is a wetland?

Generally speaking, a wetland is an area that is ‘wet’ for a period of time. Many wetlands are wet year-round while others are seasonally wet. During dry periods, some wetlands may not be wet at all for an entire summer. However, once water returns, these areas will again hold water.

All wetlands have wetland plants and soils that are adapted to flooded or water-saturated conditions.

Wetlands also have riparian zones, which are the moist, vegetated areas around the wetland that act as a transition to the drier upland areas. Learn more about wetlands and why they are important by consulting DUC’s wetland facts, list of wetland values and information on how wetlands work.

3. How can I help conserve wetlands?

There are lots of ways you can help DUC to conserve Canada’s wetland habitats. You can volunteer, become a DUC member, make a donation to DUC or attend a DUC fundraising event. Whichever way you choose to support DUC, you’ll be helping to conserve wetland habitats that benefit all Canadians and approximately 600 species of wildlife.

4. How is DUC funded?

DUC gets its money from three main sources, with roughly a third coming from each. The first is Ducks Unlimited Inc. (in the United States), which funds DUC’s conservation work for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl.

The second funding source is the federal government in the United States. Under the North American Wetlands Conservation Act of Congress, the U.S. government provides money to organizations that conserve wetlands. In order to be used in Canada, this money must be matched by non-federal U.S. dollars.

The final third comes from DUC’s own fundraising activities in Canada, as well as support from all three levels of government. Through memberships, donations and DUC events, money is raised to conserve Canada’s wetlands.

More than 88 per cenet of all dollars received by DUC are invested in conservation, wetland and waterfowl research and education initiatives.

5. Is DUC a charitable organization, and if so, are tax receipts issued for donations?
