Wake up to Wetlands and Water!
As soon as the alarm clock sounds every morning, millions of Canadians have their first brush with wetlands. Think about it. Odds are the water in your shower has been through a wetland, along with the water flowing from your taps. That very same water, now serving the needs of your household, has likely spent a portion of its travels winding through a wetland being filtered in Mother Nature's purification system
However it's time to become alarmed about protecting the wetlands of Canada. Wetlands are destroyed on a regular basis, mostly for increasing urban development and agricultural needs. These practices are eliminating a vital cog in ensuring water quality.
Apart from their valuable role as habitat for hundreds of species of wildlife and waterfowl, wetlands also:
- Help to purify surface water by breaking down, removing, using or trapping nutrients, agricultural herbicides and pesticides, organic waste and sediment that is carried to them by runoff water
- Reduce the severity of floods by retaining water and releasing it slowly during drier periods
- Protect shorelines from erosion by slowing the flow of water and lowering the crest of rivers and streams during spring and storm runoff peaks
- Recharge groundwater supplies by soaking up surface water and letting some of it seep back into the ground where it's filtered even further
Ducks Unlimited has been working to conserve Canada's wetland habitat for 62 years. Together with support from people like you, DU has enhanced and protected 18 million acres of wetland habitat across Canada.
Your children and your children's children deserve to have safe drinking water at the turn of the tap. DU is absolutely committed to providing them with that option. But you can help us too.
By supporting DU, you will help fund new wetland conservation projects in Canada that ensure the future of our wetlands and water resources. Since DU's work is strictly nonprofit, its ability to protect and conserve these wetlands depends on the help of Canadians like you.
So come on, let's all wake up to Canada's wetlands together! Join DUC today.
