Wetland Centres of Excellence
Canadian youth are playing an active role in the future of our wetlands
High Schools interested in longer term enrichment and action projects focused on wetlands can partner with DUC to create a Wetland Centre of Excellence. These outdoor classrooms offer students a wide variety of cross-curricular activities, funded by program partners.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has developed partnerships with high schools interested in longer term enrichment and action projects centred on wetlands.
Five schools are officially part of the Wetland Centres of Excellence network across Canada. With funding provided by Green Street and help from DUC, each school has adopted a local wetland or created their own wetland as an outdoor classroom.
Cross-curricular activities making up these programs have included biodiversity studies, habitat improvements, nest boxes, bird and duck banding, animal studies, art, music and writing programs, building interpretive facilities and mentoring younger students in environmental studies.
Our partner schools include:
- East Elgin Secondary School, Aylmer, ON
- École secondaire du Mont-Sainte-Anne, Beaupré, QC
- Clarence Fulton Secondary School, Vernon, BC
- Fort Richmond Collegiate, Winnipeg, MB
- The Tantramar Wetlands Centre, Sackville, NB
- Timiskaming District Secondary School, New Liskeard, ON
- Wellington Heights Secondary School, Mount Forest, ON
- Queen Elizabeth District High School, Sioux Lookout, ON
- Nellie McClung Collegiate, Manitou, MB
“In addition to providing Tantramar teachers with a unique opportunity to enrich the teaching and learning environment across the curriculum, this program has harnessed the enthusiasm and energy of more than 100 teenagers in support of wetland conservation. Big kids teaching little kids about the importance of wildlife is powerful stuff to see and experience first-hand.”
Chris Porter (Tantramar HS)
Wetland teams develop a plan and budget, and then receive funds for field and lab equipment, infrastructure, field trips, student internships and more. If you are interested in learning more about the Wetland Centre of Excellence program, please contact:
