Newfoundland and Labrador
The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is world-renowned for its untamed natural beauty. Its starkly beautiful coastal areas are home to one of the most well-known sea ducks, the common eider. Over 150,000 pairs of breeding common eider ducks once thrived along Newfoundland and Labrador’s coastline, however, human and industrial activity as well as growing predator populations contributed to drastic population declines as low as 12 000 breeding pairs.
With a booming economy based heavily in natural resource extraction, DUC’s priority in Newfoundland and Labrador is to work with the provincial government and our other conservation partners to promote sustainable development and to emphasize the need to protect the province’s natural areas and habitat. DUC is also looking to expand its experience in wetland restoration into NL, to offset the large number of major industrial and development projects underway.
