The Story of Beaubassin

Beaubassin is located among the Beausejour Marshes. It stands at the crossroads of history where First Nations, Acadians and English peoples played a major role in its development and in shaping Canada.

The original house located on the property has been restored to a research facility, while the surrounding freshwater and salt marshes are being restored as well. The goal is to develop an internationally recognized centre for coastal and wetland research and historical discovery.

“The site has magic to it.” The Beaubassin Research Station serves as a model of how science will be conducted in the future. Its unique blend of partnerships and collaboration are essential to advancing conservation.

The research station was officially opened in August of 2012 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. It is located on Tonge’s Island National Historic Site of Canada, which was the former capital of Acadia (1678-1684).

About the work The site of the Beaubassin Research Station has a rich history. Both Aboriginal peoples and Acadian settlers used it as a meeting place. Today, it’s Ducks Unlimited Canada’s hub for wetland and waterfowl research in Atlantic Canada.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is proud to partner with Irving Oil and Acadia University on the Beaubassin Research Station.

Beaubassin brings together students and researchers to collaborate on wetland and waterfowl issues that are of the utmost significance to our past, present and future.
