Ducks Unlimited Canada launches three environmental projects with support from Microsoft Canada

The Quebec team of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is proud to announce it has received support from Microsoft Canada to advance three wetland and water habitat development and restoration projects in the Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches regions.

In Lévis, in collaboration with Agiro, DUC will lead a project in a conserved wetland with the goal of reorganizing a network of unofficial trails to maintain public access to nature while preserving sensitive habitats. By limiting unorganized trails that could degrade the environment, this initiative will help strengthen the site’s ecological resilience. Awareness activities about the importance of wetlands will also be offered to the local community.

In Donnacona, DUC will support a restoration and enhancement project for a stormwater retention basin located on municipal land. Together with the Corporation du bassin de la Jacques-Cartier (CBJC), this initiative aims to revitalize habitats while maintaining the basin’s essential functions. It will help improve natural water filtration and create optimal conditions for local flora and fauna thanks to areas of water rich in vegetation like wetlands. The project will also benefit local residents by providing access to the restored wetland and offering educational and interpretive activities.

In Quebec City, within the Lorette River watershed, DUC and the Centre for teaching and research in forestry, (referred to as CERFO) will oversee the planting of hundreds of trees and shrubs. Increasing vegetation cover helps reduce flood risks in this watershed that is prone to flooding, improve water quality, boost climate resilience and support local biodiversity. This initiative is part of a broader wetland and water habitat restoration project conducted in collaboration with numerous collaborators and financial supporters.

“We are very pleased to count on Microsoft’s financial support to implement these three projects, which will have many tangible positive effects on both communities and biodiversity. In addition to conserving high-value natural areas, these initiatives will raise public awareness about the ecological functions of wetlands.”

Mélanie Deslongchamps, Manager of Provincial Operations (Quebec), Ducks Unlimited Canada
