Ducks Unlimited Canada joins forces to advance environmental literacy in education

Stonewall, MB — July 23, 2025 — Ducks Unlimited Canada is proud to receive funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), la Fondation de Gaspé Beaubien and the Consecon Foundation in collaboration with members of the Nature Education Collective (NEC): Canadian Wildlife Federation, Earth Rangers, Outward Bound Canada and Project Learning Tree Canada. This important investment will support the NEC’s mission to champion quality nature education for children and youth and advance environmental literacy at a national scale.

With this funding, we are piloting an innovative three-pronged approach designed to bring meaningful non-formal nature education to students, educators and administrators in multiple school systems across Canada. Our three pillars of work include:

  1. Regional dialogues, consisting of convening activities aimed at entrenching a long-term commitment to nature education in participating school systems and developing a community of practice.
  2. Teacher training, including train-the-trainer programs that ensure educators build knowledge, confidence and skills, and are supported with accessible tools and resources that develop critical competencies.
  3. Student programming that supports lifelong learning and reaches underserved youth, advances nationwide environmental literacy, and reduces climate anxiety through personal action and hope.

When students and educators collaborate with members of the NEC, they receive extensive support to achieve rapid and sustained progress. This project will be active in multiple provinces across Canada, including but not limited to Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is excited to begin this transformative work with the NEC and are deeply grateful for the federal government’s recognition of the importance of environmental literacy in education. Together, we can build a more informed, resilient, and sustainability-focused future for all children and youth in Canada.
