Ethics in nature, and more specifically in wildlife photography, are of paramount importance. It’s essential to maintain an appropriate distance when shooting wildlife. A good approach is always slow, quiet, and respectful—one that doesn’t disrupt the animal’s natural behaviour or put it in harm’s way. An ethical approach to wildlife photography helps contribute to the protection and conservation of wetlands.

Prime times to go out with your camera

Make the most of the day’s best light by heading out during golden hours: sunrise and sunset. Sunrise is an ideal moment for taking pictures of wildlife. This is when wildlife truly comes to life, opening the door to incredible encounters and great photographic opportunities.

Techniques for taking great photos

Match your camera’s height to the subject: Shooting from a low or high angle may undermine the dynamic you’re trying to establish with your images.

Getting down to the animal’s level instantly draws you into its world, resulting in far more interesting shots. Positioning your camera at your subject’s height and shooting straight on adds depth and proximity to your images, making all the difference.

Take the landscape’s features into account: In wildlife photography, we tend to focus on our main subject, sometimes ignoring what’s around it. However, including the surrounding landscapes can add a special touch to your photos. Keep an eye out for elements that will highlight your subject, such as lichen or moss on a branch, a dead tree, a background featuring fall colours, or beautiful snow-covered trees.
