As beautiful and important as our wetlands are, they are threatened.
It is estimated that up to seventy per cent have been lost in the southern areas of Canada.

Prairie Pothole Region

Much of the movie was filmed in the Prairie Pothole Region, an iconic landscape which spans southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, extending into North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Montana.

The Prairie Pothole Region formed by receding glaciers scraping across North America leaving behind millions of shallow pools, or “potholes”. These “potholes” filled with water to create seasonal and year-round wetlands that play host to hundreds of species of migratory birds—some of which are critically endangered.

This essential habitat spans 800,000 square kilometres across the Canadian and American prairies. Sixty per cent of North America’s ducks are hatched here, and hundreds of species of shore birds and songbirds rely on the Prairie Pothole Region for survival.
