How do you deter geese from your yard?

Canada geese are native to Canada, but the large numbers of geese now nesting in towns and cities across Southern Canada are largely the result of changes people have made to the landscape.

Since the 1970s, urban expansion, manicured lawns, golf courses, stormwater ponds and changes in agricultural practices have created ideal breeding habitat for some Canada geese.

These geese are sometimes referred to as “resident” geese because they do not migrate to far northern regions to breed. Instead, they nest and raise their young close to people, benefiting from abundant food, safe nesting sites near water and few natural predators. These geese have established populations across Canada from British Columbia through to the Maritimes.

If geese are spending more time in your yard than you’d like, the answer is not chasing birds or trying to force them out. The most effective solutions work quietly over time and start with understanding one simple thing:

To answer that, it helps to think like a goose.

When a goose lands in a new place, it is not admiring the view. It is doing a quick, practical assessment. Stay here, or keep moving? That decision usually comes down to three questions.

1. Can I see danger coming?

Geese feel safest in wide‑open spaces. Short grass and clear sightlines let them spot predators early and relax a little.

How to change that:

• Let grass grow longer, about 10-15 cm (4-6 in.)
• Add shrubs, garden beds or clumps of native grasses
• Plant taller vegetation or natural buffers along ponds and drainage areas

When views are broken up and edges feel less open, the area loses its appeal. From a goose’s perspective, it suddenly feels a bit uncertain, and this usually means “not worth staying.”

2. Is this a good place to eat?

Geese are efficient grazers. They are looking for the biggest return for the least effort, and manicured, fertilized lawns deliver exactly that.

How to change that:

• Reduce or eliminate lawn fertilization
• Replace portions of turf with clover or native ground covers
• Avoid feeding geese or other wildlife

When the menu gets less appealing, geese tend to move on and look elsewhere.

3. Can I move in and out easily?

Geese like places where walking, resting and heading back to water is simple. Easy access makes a space comfortable enough to linger.

How to change that:

• Install temporary fencing or string lines near shorelines
• Place reflective tape or pinwheels along common entry points
• Use predator silhouettes and move them regularly

These deterrents do not harm geese. They simply make the space feel awkward and inconvenient. And for geese, awkward is usually enough.
