10 Meaningful Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time of giving to your loved ones, your communities and causes that matter most to you. During this time of generosity and gratitude, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) provides you with many ideas and ways to give back and make a lasting difference.

Charitable giving does not always have to be a monetary donation, although it can be! You can donate your time, share your skills, contribute investments or land, attend a fundraising event, or rally your community around a cause.

Here we have rounded up 10 ways you can make a difference this holiday season. And for those passionate about nature and the outdoors, DUC offers a variety of ways to support wetland conservation and help protect the landscapes that wildlife and people depend on.

1. Make a One-Time Charitable Donation

A one-time donation is a simple way to support a cause that matters to you. Any amount that fits your budget can help a charitable organization deliver programs, provide essential services and help move their mission forward.

Instead of purchasing another gift, consider a charitable donation in someone’s honour. It’s a thoughtful way to celebrate their values.

If you have a nature lover or avid outdoorsperson on your list, a donation to Ducks Unlimited Canada supports the conservation, restoration and management of wetlands and grasslands for waterfowl, wildlife and people.

Explore donation options that double as thoughtful gift ideas.

2. Give the Gift of Membership

Many non-profits and charities offer monthly or annual memberships that help organizations build lasting relationships with supporters and provide ongoing funding for their work.

For as little as $5 per month, you can become a Ducks Unlimited Canada member, connecting you with a community committed to conserving Canada’s wetlands and wildlife, while enjoying exclusive perks like discounts, giveaways and more.

3. Make a Planned Gift for Future Generations

Giving back can extend beyond the holiday season. Planned giving allows you to include a charitable gift in your long-term financial or estate planning, helping support a cause you care about well into the future.

Options include leaving a gift in your will, naming a charity as a life insurance beneficiary or arranging a future gift through an RRSP or RRIF. These gifts can reflect your values and create a lasting legacy without requiring a donation today. Consider speaking with a qualified financial, legal or tax adviser to understand which options suit your circumstances.

4. Donate Securities

If you own publicly traded stocks, bonds or mutual fund units, donating eligible securities directly to a registered charity is another way to give. Depending on the asset and your circumstances, this approach may offer tax advantages compared with selling the investment and donating the proceeds. Before making a transfer, consult a qualified tax or financial advisor.

DUC accepts gifts of eligible publicly traded securities to support wetland and grassland conservation. Learn about gifting publicly traded securities.

5. Become a Volunteer

Giving back does not always need to be financial in nature. Giving your time is one of the most personal and impactful ways to give back. Charities and community organizations rely on volunteers to organize events, connect with supporters and share expertise that can help bring important initiatives to life.

DUC volunteers support conservation in communities across Canada. Learn about the different opportunities to get involved by volunteering with DUC .

6. Attend a Charity Fundraising Event

Make giving back part of your holiday calendar by attending a charity event. Fundraising dinners, auctions, community gatherings and outdoor activities offer opportunities to connect with others while supporting a meaningful cause.

Ducks Unlimited Canada hosts events throughout the year, including banquets, galas, golf tournaments, clay shoots, runs and rides. Attending an event is a fun way to meet like-minded people and contribute to wetland conservation.

7. Create Your Own Fundraiser

If you are more of a do-it-yourselfer, you can fundraise independently and donate any funds to a charity of your choice. Turn a personal passion into an opportunity to give back – host a holiday bake sale, organize a neighbourhood skating party, run a workplace giving challenge or ask friends and family to donate in lieu of gifts at a celebration.

DUC encourages supporters to create their own fundraisers to raise money and awareness for wetland conservation. From a birthday fundraiser to a community walk or outdoor challenge, you can choose an activity that reflects your interests and inspires others to participate.

8. Become a Brand, Corporate or Community Partner

Businesses can make a difference by partnering with charitable organizations. Corporate partnerships may include financial contributions, employee engagement programs, cause-related marketing, event sponsorships or in-kind support.

For companies looking to make a meaningful contribution to Canada’s natural environment, Ducks Unlimited Canada offers partnership opportunities that connect organizations with conservation initiatives and environmentally engaged communities.

9. Donate Land to Support Conservation

For landowners, donating property can be a powerful way to conserve natural spaces for future generations. Land donations and conservation easements may help preserve important habitats, depending on the property’s ecological value and the arrangement established with the recipient organization.

DUC is a Canadian charity organization that considers land donations as part of its conservation work. Depending on the property and circumstances, a gift may help protect wetlands and wildlife habitats over the long term.

10. Donate Products, Goods or Services

Another alternative to financial contributions is the donation of products, goods or services. Businesses and individuals may be able to donate equipment, merchandise, gift certificates or other useful goods to support a charity’s activities. Donated products can sometimes be used as prizes for fundraising auctions, raffles or community events. Businesses can also explore whether their products or services align with a charity’s programs and fundraising needs.

DUC works with partners and supporters to help advance conservation. If your business has products, equipment or other in-kind contributions to offer, contact DUC to discuss potential opportunities.
