Five markers of healthy fish habitat—that actually start on land

1. Wetlands Across the Landscape

What to look for: Wetlands like marshes or bogs in the vicinity of a larger water body.  

Why it matters for fish: Wetlands across the landscape work together to support the health of nearby lakes and rivers. They store excess water during wet periods and release it slowly during dry conditions, helping maintain more stable water levels and better conditions for fish. 

Wetlands also help slow water, trap sediment and filter contaminants before they reach larger water bodies, improving water quality and supporting the food sources that fish depend on. 

Because wetlands influence how water moves, how clean it is and how much food is available, they play a foundational role in creating and maintaining healthy fish habitat.

2. Natural, Vegetated Shorelines

What to look for: Native vegetation, grasses, shrubs, cattails, wetlands, and trees growing along the water’s edge.  

Why it matters for fish: Vegetated shorelines can help stabilize banks and reduce erosion, filter runoff and maintain water quality, and create better conditions for the entire aquatic food web. 

When shorelines are stripped of vegetation or hardened with infrastructure, rainwater can flow rapidly into waterways, carrying sediment and pollutants which can be harmful for fish downstream.

3. Signs That Water Is Slowing Down

What to look for: Meandering streams, wetlands, low-lying areas and floodplain habitats. 

Why it matters for fish: Erosion can cause excess sediment in the water, while slower-moving water can reduce erosion. Too much sediment can be abrasive to fish gills or settle into the spaces between rocks where some fish lay their eggs, preventing the eggs from getting the oxygen they need to survive. 

Healthy watersheds often contain wetlands and floodplains that slow water down before it reaches rivers and lakes, giving water time to spread out across the landscape. As water slows, sediment drops out and stays behind rather than being carried downstream.  

4.Vegetated Buffers Along Streams and Ditches 

What to look for: Narrow, un-mowed strips of vegetation beside streams and creeks.  

Why it matters for fish: The filtration action of these land-based features can help prevent excess nutrients from entering lakes and rivers, which can fuel algae blooms that reduce oxygen levels. Less nutrient pollution means fewer harmful algae blooms and more stable oxygen levels for fish and the organisms they feed on. 

Known as riparian buffers, these vegetated areas slow runoff, trap sediment, absorb excess nutrients and filter contaminants before they reach larger water bodies.

5. Connected Waterways and Accessible Habitat

What to look for: Maintained connections between wetlands, streams, rivers and lakes. These include natural channels linking habitats together or infrastructure designed to allow fish passage. 

Why it matters for fish: Throughout their lifecycle, many species need to travel between feeding areas, spawning grounds, nursery habitats and seasonal refuges. Because these areas are often separated, fish depend on connected waterways to move between them. When waterways become disconnected, fish can lose access to these important areas, which can affect their ability to survive and grow.

Healthy fisheries start before the water

The next time you’re heading out to fish, take a look around before launching the boat or casting a line. 

Are there wetlands nearby? Vegetated shorelines? Natural channels connecting habitats? Signs that water is slowing down rather than rushing straight through the landscape? 

These features may seem far removed from the fish below the surface, but they’re often the reason healthy fisheries exist in the first place.
