The Grasslands Case Study

How will you protect Canada’s endangered grasslands?

  • Grade level: Grade 10 and up

Canada’s temperate grasslands are found in the Prairies in the uppermost range of the Great Plains. These grasslands are rich in biodiversity and play important roles in water regulation and protection against soil erosion as well as acting as carbon sinks. Despite their importance, our temperate grasslands have been named the world’s most endangered ecosystem. Formed over thousands of years by the unique climate, grazing of large animals and fire, these grasslands combine with wetlands to form rich, biodiverse ecosystems that support hundreds of species and many species at risk.

In this case study, students will develop a conservation strategy for a new area of land that has grasses, forests and wetlands on it. They will explore several conservation strategies for how to manage grassland ecosystems and explore how to engage with people in the community to prepare a conservation plan.
