The Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program and your wetland
Offered in Ontario
Let us help you save on your Managed Forest Plan while conserving one of our most important natural resources: wetlands.
Are you completing a Managed Forest Plan for your southern Ontario property? Do you have an existing wetland on your property? We can help you save on your investment.
Landowners who qualify for Ontario’s Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) and have an existing wetland that meets our criteria can apply to DUC for a 40% reimbursement (up to $600) toward an approved Managed Forest Plan. The wetland must be a minimum of five acres (two hectares) and meet DUC’s criteria for waterfowl habitat.
This partnership involving DUC and the Ontario Woodlot Association is supporting wetland stewardship and is made possible by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
Is your wetland eligible for the program?
The MFTIP program cannot overlap with other DUC conservation programs such as livestock exclusion fencing or installing wood duck nest boxes.
To be eligible, landowners must:
- Complete a Managed Forest Plan through the MFTIP program (with a Managed Forest Plan Approver)
- Identify an existing wetland in their Managed Forest Plan, which is a minimum of 5 acres (2 hectares) and provides waterfowl habitat
- Be located within the southern Ontario eligibility area (see the map)
- Commit to a 10-year Conservation Agreement with DUC
Tax relief for managed forests
MFTIP offers tax relief for private landowners who follow an approved Managed Forest Plan for their forest. Landowners who qualify for the program have their property classified and assessed under the Managed Forest property class. The land is then taxed at 25 percent of the municipal residential tax rate.
