The wood duck 🦆 is considered by many to be the most beautiful of North American waterfowl.

The breeding male has an iridescent green and white crested head, red eyes, a red and white bill, a chestnut breast, golden flanks and an iridescent back. These vibrant markings are what make them a fan favourite of waterfowlers and wildlife photographers alike.

In Canada, we're fortunate to have an abundance of natural spaces to enjoy and species to connect with—which includes our freshwater resources. 🛶🦆 We're used to a safe and reliable water supply, but chronic issues are plaguing our water and making our lakes sick. We can no longer take it for granted.

If we value our water resources, our work to save them begins with healthy wetlands. By working together to promote wetland conservation, we can save our water. 🌊

Today marks the International Day of Forests and the theme this year focuses on healthy forests for healthy people—which we think is the perfect opportunity to highlight the boreal forest and how we all benefit from it and its network of wetlands!

So many aspects of our lives are linked to forests, but we often don't make the connection—like our health, clean water and fresh air, medicine, food and shelter.

Few wild places remain on Earth like Canada’s boreal forest—a 1.3 billion-acre landscape defined by water and wildlife. It's home to over 600 Indigenous communities, buffers against the impacts of climate change, provides essential habitat to wildlife and supports the wellbeing of all people.

As we reflect on 85 years of Ducks Unlimited Canada, we have many stories we'd like to share with you—and the story of Oak Hammock Marsh is a special one. It's home to our national head office, but most importantly, @oakhammockmarsh is a designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, the site of an Important Bird Area and home to the Harry J. Enns Wetlands Discovery Centre.

Spring is almost here, which means the skies will soon be filled with birds migrating back to their northern ranges—including the western boreal forest. 🌲

The boreal forest is a 1.3 billion-acre landscape defined by water and wildlife that stretches across Canada from Newfoundland and Labrador to Yukon. It is one of the most important waterfowl conservation regions in North America—providing essential habitat for over 300 species of birds, as well as thousands of other species of native plants and wildlife. 🦆

Spring is near, which means our favourite migratory bird species have begun to stretch their wings and get ready for the journey back to their northern ranges—like the Prairie Pothole Region. 🌾🦆

The Prairie Pothole Region consists of some of the best waterfowl breeding grounds in the world. In Canada, the region spans southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It also extends into North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Montana in the United States.

Not only does the Prairie Pothole Region provide essential habitat for waterfowl, but it also serves as habitat for hundreds of other species—including songbirds and shorebirds, and more than 50 species at-risk.
