Lieutenant Governor Presents Wetland Conservation Award

Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award recognizes contributions to wetland conservation in Manitoba

Winnipeg, Man., November 24, 2005— At a ceremony on Thursday, November 24 at Government House, The Honourable John Harvard, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, presented the province’s first Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to Dr. Frank Baldwin for his outstanding contribution towards wetland conservation and education in Manitoba.

Awarded annually and sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed significantly to the public awareness of wetland conservation in Manitoba, and/or demonstrated outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations or community-based program or project which benefits wetland conservation, and/or demonstrated leadership in an education project or activity that has increased public awareness and understanding of the values of wetland ecosystems and their benefit to waterfowl, wildlife and people in Manitoba.

“Wetlands are important for many practical and intrinsic reasons,” said Lieutenant Governor Harvard. “It’s satisfying to know that people like Dr. Baldwin are working on our behalf to educate people, especially our young people, about these extremely valuable habitats.”

A dedicated volunteer for wetland and wildlife conservation in Manitoba, Baldwin is active on the board of the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre and is a past board member of DUC where he served as chair of its education committee. Baldwin is also a volunteer for a number of wildlife organizations and is a founding board member of the Netley Marsh Waterfowl Foundation. In all of these capacities he has been a strong leader and staunch promoter of innovative science and environmental education related to wetlands.

“Receiving this award is a great honour for me,” said Baldwin. “It is a privilege to work closely with many others - volunteers, landowners and staff and other agencies, both government and non-government - in helping to achieve the singleness of purpose to conserve wetlands for the benefit of waterfowl, which in turn provide healthy environments for wildlife and people.”

“The establishment of the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award is an important step forward for wetland conservation as it recognizes the contributions of local stewards and conservationists across the province,” said James Richardson, DUC board member and senior volunteer for Manitoba. “Our very health and economic well-being of our province depend on how we care for Manitoba’s wetlands.”
