Conservation is par for the course at Royal Ashburn
Barrie, Ont., January 21, 2010 —Public places and green spaces can thrive together, thanks to conservation-minded organizations like the Royal Ashburn Golf Club near Whitby, Ont. This fall, the club unveiled a wetland on its grounds and hosted a successful fundraising golf tournament and dinner in support of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). These efforts generated more than $60,000 for DUC and will give hundreds of local schoolchildren the opportunity to experience the wonders of wetlands first-hand.
“Environmental education is something we truly believe in,” says Royal Ashburn’s David Paterson. “By supporting DUC, and having a wetland right here on the course, we can make a positive difference for future generations.”
Educating youth about the value of wetlands is a key aspect of DUC’s Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign. Project Webfoot is DUC’s youth wetland education program that provides Grade 4 to 6 students with kits of exciting and engaging in-class learning materials, as well as wetland field trips.
Funds raised at the Royal Ashburn’s recent golf tournament and dinner will help send lucky groups of local students to the course’s wetland as part of the Project Webfoot program. There, they’ll have the opportunity to learn about the vital role wetlands play in their lives in a unique “outdoor classroom.”
Thanks to the support of people like the Patersons, and everyone who made the event a success, DUC is discovering the passion in the next generation of conservationists.
