Luc Baillargeon – Volunteering with DUC – Great Ideas Become Reality
Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., April 12, 2010 — After talking with Luc Baillargeon about his volunteer work with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) for even just a few minutes, one gets the sense that anything is possible – his positive attitude and enthusiasm for conservation are contagious. The Victoriaville father of three and Health and Safety Manager for a national dairy company has found DUC to be a natural fit for his commitment to conservation and his forward thinking approach to life.
Since becoming a DUC volunteer in 2006, Luc chairs the annual Victoriaville dinner, is a key participant in the DUC Quebec bike tour, is the newly appointed president of the provincial council and is the mastermind behind the Great DUC Victoriaville Cleanup. The Cleanup is an annual event that brings together members of the community of all ages and all walks of life to remove garbage from the Reservoir Beaudet. It is strongly supported by the City of Victoriaville and it raises awareness about DUC’s role in the community. Luc is proud that as many as 60 people turn out for this event every year and that it receives such a high profile.
“I chose to volunteer with DUC not only because of their wetland habitat and water quality work but also because they support and encourage their volunteers to think big,” says Luc. “It gives me tremendous satisfaction to help create new fundraising opportunities that fit with DUC’s goals.”
Luc has also benefited immensely – both personally and professionally – from his volunteer involvement with DUC. “Being part of the DUC team has helped me to become a better listener,” says Luc. “I learn from all of the different views and experiences of my fellow committee members, am more open to new ideas and am prepared to pay close attention now when someone says…’I’ve been thinking…’ and to hear out their thoughts and ideas.”
“Luc is an amazing addition to our fundraising team in Victoriaville,” says Jocelyn Landry, DUC’s fundraising manager in Quebec. “He has brought the chapter to a new level both in terms of our success and the way we think about fundraising. We refer to him as ‘Monsieur Bon Humeur’ which translated means that he is like our sunshine. He is always positive and thinking about solutions – he is a great motivator for our volunteers and the guests at our events.”
“National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, is our opportunity to celebrate DUC’s team of 7,400 dedicated volunteers like Luc,” says Loraine Nyokong, DUC director of event and retail fundraising. “DUC volunteers are continually giving freely of themselves to organize fundraising events across Canada for the benefit of wetland conservation. They are the driving force behind our success.”
“For me, the best part of volunteering with DUC is being part of a team that is truly making a difference within my community for people and for wildlife,” says Luc. “I want to help make DUC’s presence in Victoriaville bigger and better every year.”
Funds raised by volunteers like Luc directly support DUC’s Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign – the largest conservation fundraising campaign in the history of North America. It spans three countries as DUC works alongside Ducks Unlimited, Inc. in the United States and Ducks Unlimited Mexico to conserve wetlands for waterfowl, other wildlife and people.
