Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to Recognize Contributions to Wetland Conservation in British Columbia

Vancouver, B.C., January 31, 2005 — A new award will recognize individuals and groups who aim and work to conserve and protect British Columbia’s wetland habitats. The creation of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award was announced today by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) president John R. Messer.

The award, which will be given out annually, is sponsored by DUC. It recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in B.C., and/or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.

“Many people in British Columbia recognize just how valuable our wetlands are, and these groups and individuals work hard to conserve them,” said The Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia. “That’s why I’m so pleased this award will recognize the efforts of those who champion the conservation of B.C.’s wetlands.”

If you know an individual or group that has contributed to wetland conservation and meets the award criteria, please consider nominating them for the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. To make a nomination, forward a completed nomination form and send it by mail to Ducks Unlimited Canada (care of Jeanette Porter), 13370-78 Avenue, Unit 51, Surrey, B.C., V3W 0H6, or by e-mail to du_surrey@ducks.ca by February 25, 2005.

“DUC is truly honoured that the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia hs provided her support in the establishment of this award,” said DUC president John R. Messer. “We lose more of our wetlands each and every day, and by rewarding those that labour to conserve these precious habitats, we hope to encourage more people to get involved in helping to secure a healthy environment for future generations of people and wildlife.”

DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and their associated habitats for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
