Lieutenant Governor Announces Award for Wetland Supporters

Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to recognize contributions to wetland conservation in Saskatchewan

Saskatoon , Sask., May 30, 2005 – For the second year, the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award will recognize individuals and groups who aim and work to conserve and protect Saskatchewan’s wetland habitats.

The award, which is given out annually, is sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). It recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in Saskatchewan, and/or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.

“Many Saskatchewan people recognize how valuable our wetlands are, and these groups and individuals work diligently to conserve them,” said Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock. “This award honours those who champion the conservation of our precious wetlands.”

In 2004, Mr. Clem Millar became the inaugural recipient of the award in the province for his role in establishing the Chaplin Nature Centre in Chaplin, Saskatchewan. “It’s wonderful to see the Chaplin Nature Centre recognized for its work in wetland conservation,” said Mr. Millar. “This award acknowledges the importance of providing educational opportunities for young and old to learn about the need for conserving wetland habitat.”

If you know an individual or group that has contributed to wetland conservation and meets the award criteria, please consider nominating them for the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. To nominate an individual or group, forward the name by mail to:

“DUC is truly honoured to be partnering with the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan in the establishment of this award,” said DUC president John R. Messer. “We lose more of our wetlands each and every day, and by rewarding those that labour to conserve these precious habitats, we hope to encourage more people to get involved in helping to secure a healthy environment for future generations of people and wildlife.”

DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and their associated habitats for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
