Ducks Unlimited Canada and Province of Manitoba Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Agreement strengthens co-operative efforts to conserve biological diversity in Manitoba.

Winnipeg, Man., December 14, 2005—The Province of Manitoba and Ducks Unlimited Canada have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) to improve co-operation to more effectively identify areas of mutual interest and opportunities for conservation efforts, Conservation Minister Stan Struthers announced today.

“Protecting biological diversity and natural ecosystems, such as wetlands, is essential for the long-term maintenance of healthy watersheds, resources and the benefit of Manitobans," said Struthers.

DUC and Manitoba have identified several strategic priorities and joint activities to guide co-operative efforts in conserving, protecting and promoting habitat stewardship. Governing principles of the MOU include promoting the stewardship of threatened habitats with increased conservation efforts in areas such as agro-Manitoba's prairie pothole region and Manitoba's boreal forests.

"Biodiversity and wetlands are increasingly lost as a result of some human activities and developments. Manitoba's wetland habitats are precious natural resources that need to be conserved, restored and managed as part of the province's environmental, economic and social future," DUC executive vice-president Gord Edwards said. "The MOU builds on DUC's and Manitoba Conservation's commitments to conserving a diverse mosaic of habitats and provides a mechanism to advance sustainable development activities."
