Lieutenant Governor announces award for wetland supporters
Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to recognize contributions to wetland conservation in Newfoundland and Labrador
Corner Brook, NL, July 10, 2006—A new award will recognize individuals and groups who aim and work to conserve and protect Newfoundland and Labrador’s wetland habitats. The creation of the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award was announced July 8 by The Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) president Peter D. Carton.
The award, which will be given out annually, is sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). It recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in Newfoundland and Labrador, and/or demonstrated outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation, and/or demonstrated leadership in an education project or activity that has increased public awareness and understanding of the values of wetland ecosystems.
When announcing the award at the closing dinner of the National Stewardship Conference, Valuing Nature - Stewardship and Conservation in Canada 2006, at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook, Mr. Roberts said “Many people in Newfoundland and Labrador recognize just how valuable our wetlands are. I’m so pleased to be associated with an award that recognizes the efforts of local stewards and conservationists.”
If you know an individual or group that has contributed to wetland conservation and meets the award criteria (PDF), please consider nominating them (PDF) for the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. To make a nomination, forward the name of the individual or group, by mail, to Ducks Unlimited Canada, 6 Labrador Place, St. John's, NL A1A 3S3 or by e-mail to du_newfoundland@ducks.ca.
“DUC is truly honoured to be partnering with the Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador in the establishment of this award,” said Mr. Carton. “We lose more of our wetlands each and every day, and by rewarding those that labour to conserve these precious habitats, we hope to encourage more people to get involved in helping to secure a healthy environment for future generations of people and wildlife.”
DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and their associated habitats for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
