Invasive Species in Manitoba: River, Lake and Wetland Invaders

Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., Oct. 8, 2008—Invasive species have become a major threat to the world’s ecosystems and economy, and Manitoba’s lands and waters are no exception. To help identify, raise awareness and prevent or limit the spread of these unwanted invaders, the Invasive Species Council of Manitoba (ISCM) has produced the Invasive Species in Manitoba: River, Lake and Wetland Invaders pocket guide with funding support from the Invasive Alien Species Partnership Project, the Manitoba Purple Loosestrife Project, and the City of Winnipeg.

The pocket guide includes background information, physical descriptions and pictures of invasive species that are established in Manitoba, such as purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and species that are expected to arrive in the future, such as salt cedar (Tamarix spp.), Eurasian water milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) and European frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae).

The ISCM is a non-profit organization providing a centralized and co-ordinated provincewide leadership approach for maintaining a healthy, biodiverse landscape through the prevention, early detection, and education and awareness of invasive alien species management practices in order to eradicate or limit further spread. The ISCM represents a number of agencies and organizations including Ducks Unlimited Canada, Leafy Spurge Stakeholders Group, Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives, Manitoba Conservation, Manitoba Weed Supervisors Association, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration, Rural Development Institute, and Water Stewardship.
